Sterile Processing - Course Planning

This 20-credit, two-quarter certificate in Sterile Processing will help prepare you for employment in surgical services in a healthcare facility. The certificate is offered in spring quarter, and classes include: 

Quarter 1 (spring)

AHE 140 Sterile/Instrument Technician (10 credits)
This course addresses infection control as well as supplying, processing and distributing supplies. You will gain knowledge in safety, inventories, interpersonal skills, communication, interdisciplinary teams, professionalism and ethics.

AHE 152 Health Provider CPR (1 credit)
In this course, you will learn Basic Life Support (BLS) approved by the American Heart Association, which includes CPR and AED. 

Quarter 2 (summer)

SPS 141 Sterile Processing Technician Practicum (9 credits)
During summer quarter, you will spend between 36-40 hours a week at an assigned hospital or healthcare facility completing a 400-hour practicum. After completion of the practicum, you will be eligible to sit for the CRCST National Examination.

The Sterile Processing certificate can be completed as an I-Best program, where you receive basic skills instruction along with in-demand job skills, or as the first quarter in a Surgical Technology certificate or Associate of Applied Science Transfer (AAS–T) degree.
